addition Your Network - The 101 on Network Cards

Network Cards help a computer to physically connect to a Lan or Local Area Network. Ethernet cards are the most tasteless form of network cards. These cards are occasionally known as Ethernet Cards (Nics) as well. Wireless and Token Ring cards are other types of network/ethernet cards. Most often Ethernet Ethernet Cards use Rj-45 jacks. These adapters support the Ethernet proper for high-speed network connections via cables.

It is because of the World Wide Web that computers are connected together, which sustain us in the transportation of data and data. If we say the internet is the spinal cord of this data and data, network cards can be said as vertebrae. With the help of networks cards one or discrete computers can connect to each other by way of Local Area Network (Lan) or Wide Area Network (Wan). Some networks are configured to allow one connection like Lan while other networks allow both the networks in their organization to co-connect. In a domestic scenario, networking consists of computers sharing the same internet, printer and file output. These files can be transmitted and received between two or more computers. Ethernet Cards often use Pci bus slot to do so.

In an endeavor for computers to describe with each other, internet service providers oftentimes use (Nic) Network Interface Cards as their point of connection. This card could be found on most computers and is the gateway straight through which you can plug an Ethernet cable.

Ethernet cables help computers transportation to high-speed internet modems/hubs. With the coming up of wireless network cards internet surfing has come to be unproblematic. Wireless Ethernet Cards describe with a wireless router or network device and thus have eliminated the requirement of tethering Ethernet cables. With the help of wireless Ethernet Card users can use their laptops within a exact range. No doubt users have to take some protection precautions in wireless networks, but these cards give flexibility to a user which is well worth the use. In laptops Pcmcia Network Interface Cards can be found. With the tube of time, network cards are becoming rarer because now-a-days many motherboards now include integrated network interfaces/cards.

Some of the manufacturers' of Network Cards [http://www.comnauts.com/collections/network-card] include: Intel Expi9404Ptl, D-Link Dge-530T, Netgear Ga311, Encore Electronics Enl832-Tx-En, Belkin F5D7000, Linksys Eg1032, Gigabyte Gn-Wp01Gs, Ibm NetXtreme 1000 T+, Trendnet Tu-Et100C, Smc Smcwusbs-N, Edimax Ew-7717Un, Zyxel Pl-100, Asus Wl-100W etc.

Wireless Networking Made Easy - Learn How To Setup a Wireless Network At Home - Part One Of Three

The topic that comes up the most when citizen ask me about computers is wireless networking (also known as Wi-Fi - Wireless Fidelity, or Wlan - Wireless Lan). What does 802.11g mean? How do I configure my router? How can I leech off of my neighbor's wireless network? Since I'm running a technology blog, I view I'd retell my knowledge on the technically-unsavvy (or the Wlan beginner). These tutorials are not for the super developed networking guru, mind you, so don't take it as such! This will be a three-part article, broken down into the following parts:

  1. What you'll need to setup a wireless network (the part you're reading now).
  2. What the standards mean.
  3. How to configure your wireless network once it's been setup.

We'll be practical here. I'm not going to bore you by going into information about the out-dated wireless standards. You don't want to know about old technology that you can't buy anymore. Saying that, I will give you a particular paragraph rundown on the origin of the terms Ieee and 802.11, because you'll see them throughout this three-part article.

What do the terms Ieee and 802.11 mean?

The incremental wireless standards are designated by a letter (e.g. B, g, n) after the numbers 802.11. It's called 802.11 because that was the name of the group formed to originate the standard. You'll see the acronym Ieee as well, which means 'Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers' - the club that ultimately oversaw the 802.11 group and the creation of the wireless standard. The median buyer doesn't need to know anything more than that. Pretty straight-forward, no?

Shopping for your wireless network.

Now, lets talk about what you'll find when you shop for a wireless router. We'll start with what you'll need to setup a wireless network in your home - the basics. First, you'll need a wireless router. There are plentifulness of makes and models, but commonly they do the same thing. I won't get into which is best, but I'll tell you what I use. My wireless router is made by D-Link, using the 'n' acceptable (more on standards later). The other major router manufacturers are NetGear, Linksys, Buffalo, Belkin and Trendnet. Like I said though, they all do commonly the same thing. Don't worry too much about the brand.

The next piece of equipment you'll need (or won't need) depends entirely on the computers you're going to be connecting to your new Wlan. If you'll be connecting a laptop, chances are you won't need any additional hardware for it, unless your laptop is more than 5 years old (in which case I'd suggest using it as a door-stop or anti-theft device, instead of a computer). Laptops come with built-in wireless Nics (network interface cards), so chances are you won't need to buy anything additional.

If you have a Pc, you can either associate it wirelessly, or if it's in close nearnessy to the wireless router, you can use a network cable and plug it directly into the back of the device. If it's not close to the router, you'll need to buy a wireless Nic. The brand doesn't certainly need to be the same as the router, though I'd suggest it for compatibility sake. What you do have to watch for, however, is that the wireless Nic and the wireless router share the same standard. Most likely this will be 'n' or 'g'. Routers and wireless Nics are commonly backwards-compatible. Meaning, they'll work on both standards (and previous standards as well).

You will need at least one network cable. This will be used to associate your router to anything broadband gadget you're using (cable or Dsl modem). You'll need a second cable if you want to associate your Pc directly to the router. That's all as far as hardware goes. Just two - perhaps three - pieces of hardware. It doesn't cost much to setup a Wlan. As I described above, the next narrative will be focused on the current Wi-Fi standards and what they mean. We'll get a exiguous more technical there.

Know What You Need for Your Home Computer Network explication

Knowing what you need helps you pick the exact devices to meet your needs in construction your home computer network solution. This is due to the abundance of wireless devices available in the electronic shop you can purchase, easy to install devices even by non-technical person. Now, which solution is suitable to meet your need?

Know What You Need

Selecting which network devices suitable for your home, you should know what you need. As general, there are three types of home computer network solutions that meet your need. They are computer networks for:

  1. Work Only
  2. Work and Play
  3. High operation Network

All the above types have the same networking idea but the operation of the router as the heart of the network is different. The higher the operation of your network you request the more expensive. If the network you need is just for browsing, email, file sharing, then you don't need a more costly high operation network.

Computer Network solution for Work

The first scenario for your home network solution is for work to allow you share broadband internet connection, share the printer, email and other simple networking tasks with consolidate of computers in the same room. In this case, you just need a modem-router expedient for example Dsl-2540 by D-Link (for Dsl service) a router with built-in Dsl modem which includes 4fast Ethernet ports.

In addition to providing the wireless way for your mobile devices, you may consider the all-in-one expedient such as the Tew-657Brm. This is an economical wireless modem-router, a 150Mbps wireless N Adsl modem router provides both Internet way and a high speed wireless N network.

For Cable broadband services, you may consider the new all-in-one Surfboard Sbg6580. This is a wireless N Docsis 3.0 Cable modem gateway which includes 4xGigabit Ethernet port for high speed wired relationship and high speed wireless N network.

The all-in-one devices include all the requirements to build a wireless network in home indubitably including the security, the Dhcp server, wired and wireless access.

In your computer network solution, should you require sharing the printer you can share it in a former way by connecting the printer to the computer and configure it to be accessible by the computer clients across the network. But for easy solution, you can pick the wireless router which includes a Usb port for hosting the printer such as Tew-634Gru by Trendnet or Asus Rt-N16 Wireless-N Gigabit Router. Both routers have built-in two Usb ports for sharing a Usb-printer and Usb-storage at the same time.

Computer Network solution for Work and Play

Should you require a wireless network in home for work and play, you can consider the router which supports high-speed both wired and wireless connection. The router must be powered by wireless N with dual band technology and supports the QoS feature such as Belkin F7D4302 Play wireless router or Tew-634Gru by Trendnet. Both routers are ideal for work and play including streaming video and include one Usb port for hosting a printer or storage.

High operation Network

Should you require a wireless network solution for fast-responsive online gaming and streaming High Definition Video as well as longer distance coverage, the network must be powered by high operation wireless router such as Linksys E-3000 or the new version E-4200 N750. Or you may also consider a Dlna compliant wireless router Wndr37Av. Those routers are designed for multimedia, high speed both wired and wireless connection. The routers preserve the gigabit Ethernet interfaces for both Lan and Wan ports. With the high operation network ready, the broadband internet services must be high-bandwidth as well.

If you have multiple home theater devices such as Xbox, Blu-Ray Players, Hdtv, you can connect them to the wireless network by installing the multiport wireless bridge such as Wli-Tx4-Ag300N by Buffalo. The Wli-Tx4-Ag300N is powered by wireless N with dual band technology to allow you connect up to four Ethernet-ready devices to the internet.

The next computer network solution is using the Powerline adapters. When you have a multi-floor building, providing the wired or wireless way to the whole construction can be difficult. Running the backbone cable for inter-floor relationship can be a difficult task to do. The easy solution is to deploy Powerline adapters or Wireless router with built-in Powerline such as Wnxr2000 N300 Wireless Router with built-In Powerline Av.

Security: How To gain Your Wi-Fi Network?

How to fetch your Wi-Fi network?

Most wireless router you bought might have an facility Cd by vendor, and the Cd will walked you through setting up protection on your router in a step by step guide or wizard. Probably you will never have to or by the way need to use it.

Actually I never setup those Cd because I find these programs cumbersome and my main conjecture is to avoid having manifold management applications which has nothing to do with my network.

So, my recommendation here's how to set up protection on your router without using a institution application.

Step 1 > Open a new browser.

Step 2> you may now type in the Ip address of the router in your browser. The step here is where you could entrance to management theory of your router. Due to different vendors, you need to lookup on your router's manual for the Ip address (Usually its 192.168.0.1, 196.168.1.1 or 10.10.0.1 or something similar to those matches) and the default password for the router. Please bear in mind that every brand of router's management Gui (Graphical User Interface) is different, I can't show you every brand as I only have one brand here to work with, so I will just direct you towards those areas which you need to configure. Please take it easy and it's not complicated, however you might need a bit of time to trial and error on your side. Try exploring nearby and find the acceptable section to manage. It's regularly quite simple.

Step 3> You should never forget this step to set a new administrator password. It's always a good first step to start with to prevent you from forgotten it later on. The step to set here is often not placed in protection section; you will need to take a look at Utilities, theory Settings or User management area. Find it and change the password immediately for any user catalogue which is available.

Step 4> Enable wireless security. To turn on your encryption, look under Wireless protection or equivalent tagged. The step over here will need you to either use Wpa or Wpa-Psk, this will only acceptable if devices on your network supported it. Otherwise you will need to use 128-bit Wep (refer to photograph above). For Wpa or Wpa-Psk, you'd have to type in your passphrase/password, else for Wep you'd need to hit the generate key. Please note that you will need to write down your passphrase/password into a piece of paper or copy it to notepad application and transfer to a thumb drive, so that you can type/copy that password into your client machines.

Step 5> change your Ssid. You shouldn't make your Ssid sound like "hack me", this will probably be a default Ssid, regularly those did not configured their Ssid will have their router name such as "linksys", "belkin", "aztech" or "dlink". Try changing it to something menacing which will be a threat for them to connect. Example likes "virusgeek", "iamvirus", "virusspreader" or "hackingyou". Probably you can think of something good than this. Remember you'll need this Ssid when you browse through ready wireless networks from your client machines. You'll find this setting under a menu called Channel or Ssid.

Step 6> Save your configuration by hitting "Apply Changes" or "Save Changes" or "Save Settings". You will need to save every change you make to the router in order to take effect. Probably you must reboot your router manifold times while this policy to be safe and secure.

Congratulation! You've covered the basics setting for you Wi-Fi network. If you would like to continue developed up your wireless security, please go ahead and I think they're more techie. If you are lost or paranoid, you could just turn off your Ssid broadcasting. (Disabling Ssid broadcasting will need you to manually type in the network name as it won't show up in windows wireless network scan.) or alternatively you can turn on Mac address filtering which will only allow limits entrance to your network with a list of clients you specifically approve.

Network - Pluscom 5 Port Gigabit Switch

Since most computers these days come with gigabit (1000Mbps) network interfaces, it makes sense to run a network capable of these speeds, especially if the network is used for media streaming (video and music) or has arduous usage by some machines for dissimilar uses (VoIp, file sharing etc.).

At the lower end of the price range for network switches, the Pluscom 5 port Gigabit Switch meets the requirements for media streaming and other data arduous networking protocols. The switch supports auto-negotiation meaning that it can differentiate in the middle of uplink and coarse ports (i.e. The cable with the connection to the internet and the cable associated to the computer), auto-Mdi/Mdix for each port meaning that it can differentiate in the middle of appropriate and cross-over cables (i.e. It doesn't matter which you use). It also adopts store-and-forwarding technology together with dynamic memory allocation, to certify data can be transmitted to every port efficiently and fast.

The Pluscom 5 port Gigabit Switch is small and therefore can be private out of sight of course so as to not impact on the ready space. Alternatively it can be wall mounted.

We attached the Pluscom switch downstream of our Belkin N1 wireless router as a means of attaching a Nas drive away from the main network. The switch installed flawlessly and allowed immediate connection of both a Pc and the Nas drive without any difficulties. We were of course impressed with the switch and file transfers were as fast as they had been previously straight through the switch built into the Belkin N1 wireless router.

We would absolutely propose the Pluscom 5 port Gigabit Switch for users wishing to enlarge the range and capabilities of their wired network.

How Do You Pick The Right Wireless Router For Your Network

Shopping for the right wireless router for your network can be frustrating since there are so many choices. You may be able to save some money in some cases. Good security is also possible.

The main brands of routers on the market, at this writing, are Linksys (now man-made by Cisco), Belkin, D-Link and Netgear. Many stores only carry Netgear and Linksys. It mostly doesn't matter which brand you pick. They all are vastly improved from years ago. Some technicians may recommend one over the other.

You will need to pick from any speeds and security levels. For the Home user you can use 802.11 G or 802.11 N. The new "N" security level is very accumulate and usually you can get more range out of the new wireless routers. Speeds are always shown on the product boxes. For home networks this is usually not real important. You should talk to a sales clerk to be sure what you are buying.

What about cost?

The cost of Wireless Routers change rapidly and there is quite a range in price. You can get some as cheep as .00 and well over 0. The more ports, speed, security and features they have the more they will cost. Also, the newer 802.11 N wireless routers are more expensive than the 802.11 G wireless routers. Older "G" Routers can be bought for less than at some stores. The "G" routers will furnish enough security and they are much economy for most home installations.

Possible problems

Normally any of the wireless routers mentioned set up fairly easy. Exceptions are as follows:

  • They usually come with a setup disk. I have seen any of these disks that are bad. Some will not unblemished the setup process or will not work for other reason.
  • The operating law will not identify the wireless connection.
  • The wires are not linked properly. This is especially true if you don't hook the network cable properly.

What can I do if I can't get it installed?

  • Reboot your computer. Sometimes this will solve everything.
  • Download the driver from the internet.
  • Call Tech Support. (This is usually your best bet)

If you already have a Wireless Router do not buy one. If you install both of them you could end up blocking the internet association or it could periodically cut out the connection. Att, lease and other providers do issue wireless router if you ask for them. If you are unsure if you already have one, call your Internet Provider.

Care and Feeding of Your Wireless Network

So you've decided that you want to set up your Internet relationship to provide wireless Internet access. You might be switching from a wired network for the first time, or maybe this is your 1st contact dealing directly with an Internet service provider. Regardless of the reason, you're going to want to take some time to set this up right, because although it can seem daunting at 1st to set up the wireless network, a dinky study ahead of time can save a lot of aggravation later.

Get a capability product

The 1st step, assuming that you've already secured Internet access, is to obtain a wireless router. It may appear easy enough to just go to the store and get whichever router is cheapest, but much like tissues or kitchen knives you'll consideration a determined unlikeness in capability if you base your selection solely on the price point. A cheap router might from suffer carrying out issues or outdated safety standards, and a speculation surface the established brands (3Com, Belkin, and Linksys, among others) is a gamble when it comes to customer service and support.

When selecting a router, you should look for the following features:

* 802.11n wireless standard, also known as 11N or Wireless-N. This is the current wireless standard, that uses many antennas to good cope traffic.

* Wi-Fi Protected Setup or Wps security. This would be the most recent in wireless security, created for its user-friendliness. Some devices even come with push-button configuration to make setup straightforward on the user.

Shop colse to a dinky first and get some feedback regarding your options. Don't just depend on online reviews or the belief of the sales staff; talk to your buddies, house members, and co-workers about their experiences with wireless routers. There really isn't any substitute for hands-on contact with a stock like this.

"Well, of course, you're gonna get hop ons..."

If only one piece of guidance can ever be given about wireless networking, it would be this: obtain your wireless network. Some citizen deliberately leave their networks open to provide entrance to neighbors or visitors, while others naturally never obtain their networks in the first place. This is probably the worst thing you can do with a wireless network. If your buddies and neighbors really need entrance to your network, that you can provide them the key. Leaving your wireless network open entirely defeats the point of having safety on your network.

Manage the Frequency

Aside from the approved "power-cycle the modem and router" advice, there are really some basic steps you can take to keep your signal strong and your carrying out excellent. First, remember that wireless routers broadcast on determined frequencies (the 2.5 Ghz band, to be precise). If you're determined that you really should be getting signal and instead you're getting reduced signal or interference, try seeing for further devices in your home that might be broadcasting on exactly the same frequencies. Interference can also be caused by further colse to wireless networks using exactly the same definite channel as your router, ordinarily because of default settings on the router.
